Post Title:           Communications Intern

Location:             Inverness

Hours:                  35.00 hours per week

Salary Band:       Meets Scottish Living Wage

Duration:             3 months (Fixed Term)

This post is part of a rolling internship programme created by Drew Hendry MP to provide young people living in the Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch & Strathspey constituency with the opportunity to work in a parliamentary office.  The postholder will work with Drew and his team for a 3-month fixed period as Communications Intern. This role is best suited to a young person who has already studied communication or multimedia, or someone interested in a career in Communications or in Politics.

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate they share our team values of empathy, professionalism, responsibility and pragmaticism 

Key Responsibilities

  • Working with MP to promote work in the community, liaising with community leaders and local businesses
  • Keeping up to date with current media developments in the local and national press
  • Assisting in the management of social media channels, including using and monitoring to communicate with stakeholders
  • Responsible for creating high-quality digital content, including social media images, newsletters, and video clips
  • Prepare press releases on local and national campaigns
  • Fostering good working relationships with community groups, press contacts and other stakeholders
  • Contributing to communications plan and media strategy
  • Support the work of the MP in parliament by attending events and meetings as required
  • Undertake research and create briefings papers as required
  • Maintaining systems as required to support communications
  • Responding to enquiries by telephone and email, passing on queries to other team members/MP as appropriate.

Person Specification

  • Passionate about improving outcomes for people and communities
  • Knowledge of politics and current affairs
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • IT literate, including competence in the MS Office Suite
  • Experience in using social media and ability to share content across platforms
  • Ability to write high-quality press releases and produce briefings
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proven ability to produce high quality, detailed work within tight timeframes
  • Flexible approach to working with the ability to work on own initiative and under time pressure

Upon appointment, the candidate will be required to comply with UK Parliament security checks. Any offer of employment is dependent on the prospective employee meeting the Baseline Personnel Security Standard, undertaken by the Members’ Staff Verification Office (MSVO).
