RELEASE: Major Progress in Delivering the Nairn Bypass

LOCAL MSP AND MP WELCOME A96 DUALLING MILESTONE FOR NAIRN

Following a Public Local Inquiry held in 2018 and recommendation made by the Reporters, Scottish Ministers have given the go-ahead for completing of the statutory procedures for the A96 dualling Inverness to Nairn (Including Nairn Bypass) scheme. The news has been welcomed by both the local MSP and MP who have long campaigned to bring this result around.

Commenting, Inverness and Nairn MSP Fergus Ewing said:

“I am delighted by this news as I have been campaigning for nearly three decades for a bypass for Nairn and for the much safer dual carriageway links for my constituents – links which in the central belt have existed for some time.   So this is great news especially for the people in Nairn.      I know that my colleague Drew Hendry MP has also worked hard to support this project and given his total support for the campaign too.

“I am grateful to the people who have been working on these plans – the engineers and public servants in Transport Scotland.

“The campaign continues however until such time as the road is completed and , as a huge project this will take some time.      I know that previous by pass projects equally have taken time to deliver.   But this announcement will be warmly welcomed by many in Inverness and Nairn and will provide a substantial improvement both in road safety and fewer casualties but also much improved journeys and travel times for people and for businesses.

“All of that said,  however, I do appreciate that there are constituents  who will be impacted by the necessary works for the road, and though I believe the bypass for Nairn is much needed and supported by the overwhelming majority I am aware that for some this will be unwelcome news.”

MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey, Drew Hendry, said:

“People living in and around Nairn and those who regularly use the road will know that this is a big moment for them. A safer dual carriageway and the associated active travel improvements will make a huge difference to a lot of people. Our local MSP, Fergus Ewing, has worked tirelessly, alongside determined local campaigners to deliver yet another major investment for the area. Coming so quickly after the decision to build a new Nairn Academy I know that local people will be just as delighted as I am.”
